Postgame Journal: Northeastern comes back against UNCW in game one; rolls in nightcap

Posted by Joshua Kummins on April 25, 2010

BROOKLINE, Massachusetts (Saturday, April 24, 2010) – The Northeastern Huskies won both games of a CAA doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Friedman Diamond in Brookline as they topped the UNCW Seahawks by 4-3 and 4-1 scores.

NU manufactured their first run in the second inning as senior Frank Compagnone (Winter Springs, FL) scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

The Seahawks came back to tie the score in the third inning when senior Michael Rooney (Cary, NC) scored on an RBI single by senior Rhett Miller (Cary, NC). They took the 2-1 lead on a solo home run by redshirt senior Robbie Monday (Elkin, NC) one inning later.

In the seventh inning, freshman Hunter Ridge (Asheboro, NC) hit another solo shot to give Wilmington the two-run lead.

The Huskies came back for the game one win when freshman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, NH) and senior Brendan Stokes (Tewksbury, MA) had one-out hits, but were replaced by pinch runners, who scored to win the game. Rookie Kevin Ferguson (Suffern, NY), running for Gillis, scored on a wild pitch, while fellow freshman Jason Roth (Sudbury, MA), running for Stokes, scored when sophomore Matt Miller (Sudbury, MA) had the game-winning bloop single over the shortstop on his 21st birthday.

Senior Les Williams (Toronto, Ontario) was the winning pitcher for the Huskies as he allowed six hits and three runs, while walking four and whiffing five over eight innings. Sophomore Tyler McSwain (Sophia, NC) did not factor into the decision, but had a good outing of six-hit, two-run ball over 7.1 innings. Junior Stephen Harrold (Raleigh, NC) took the loss as he allowed three hits and two runs over the final inning.

Northeastern kicked off the second game with a bang as freshman Alan Pastyrnak () hit an inside-the-park home run that bounced over the center fielder’s head and rolled all the way to the 435 foot marker in center field. Rookie John Puttress (New Providence, NJ) tripled and scored on an RBI single by Gillis in the second for a 2-0 lead.

The lead was trimmed in half in the top of the fourth on another solo shot by Monday, but the Huskies answered with an RBI double by Pete Castoldi (Marblehead, MA) in the fifth inning.

Puttress led off the seventh inning with his first career home run to left field, which gave NU the 4-1 lead they never looked back upon.

Sophomore Drew Leenhouts (Franklin, MA) got the complete game win as he allowed one bad pitch in the ballgame on six hits and a walk. He struck out a career-high ten batters en route to the victory. Junior Cam Roth (Poquoson, NC) gave up eight hits and four runs over seven innings for the loss.

The teams close the three-game set in Brookline on Sunday at 1 p.m.
