Postgame Journal: Navs first win streak of 2010 snapped by Bay Sox

Posted by Joshua Kummins on June 19, 2010

LYNN, Massachusetts (Saturday, June 19, 2010) – New Bedford spoiled the North Shore Navigators four-game winning streak as the Bay Sox romped the Navs, 9-1, at Fraser Field on Saturday night. Based on tonight’s results, New Bedford improves to 6-3, while North Shore falls to 4-7.

As the score indicates, the game was ugly from the start for the Navs as the Bay Sox tagged starter Michael Johnson (Dartmouth) for three runs on four hits and an error in the first inning. The first two runs scored on an RBI single by Mike Greco (USC), the first on the hit and the ladder on an error by North Shore shortstop Ryan Geffert (Southern Connecticut).

It got worse for Johnson and North Shore as the Bay Sox made it 7-0 with four more runs in the third. Drew Dwelly (Barry) and Nate Goro (Wichita State) plated the first two runs on RBI singles, while the third and fourth runs of the frame came on another single by Micah Green (Wichita State).

The Navigators finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Geffert came in the back door as Mason Heyne (Rider) grounded into a double play.

New Bedford closed the scoring with their final two runs in the seventh inning. The Bay Sox’ first run came on a single by Dwelly, while he scored on a wild pitch off of Navs reliever Mark Williams (Marietta).

Johnson was the losing pitcher for the Navs as he allowed 11 hits and five earned runs over four innings to take his first decision of the season. Williams came out of the bullpen and allowed four hits and an earned run over three innings. The only true relief came in the form of Bryant Gauthier (Southern New Hampshire) and Brandon Bargas (Oklahoma) who combined for a pair of perfect innings, while fanning three in the process.

Bay Sox starter Anthony Pisani (Rhode Island) was on top of his game as he allowed just five hits, an earned run, and a walk over six innings to pick up his first win of the season. In relief, Luke Farrell struck out five in three innings in a non-save situation.

North Shore concludes a current three-game homestand on Sunday night, welcoming the two-time league champion Vermont Mountaineers to Fraser Field. Nolan Corr (Wheaton) will be on the hill against Cole Johnson (Notre Dame).
