The Red Sox were relatively busy on Saturday as the MLB non-waiver trade deadline passed this afternoon. The Sox designated two players for assignment and made two trades.

BOSTON, MA — Prior to today’s game, the Boston Red Sox selected outfielder Ryan Kalish to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Pawtucket, designated outfielder Jeremy Hermida for assignment and recalled left-handed pitcher Dustin Richardson from Pawtucket. The club also traded right-handed pitcher Ramon Ramirez to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for right-handed pitcher Daniel Turpen. Additionally, Boston acquired catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the Texas Rangers in exchange for first baseman Christopher McGuiness, right-handed pitcher Roman Mendez, a player to be named later and cash considerations. Saltalamacchia has been optioned to Pawtucket.

Kalish, 22, is making his Major League debut today with the start in left field, wearing No. 55. In 78 games between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket this season, the left-handed batter has hit .294 (86-for-293) with 18 doubles, 2 triples, 13 home runs, 47 RBI, 57 runs scored, 42 walks and 25 stolen bases. Kalish has appeared in 70 games in the outfield over the two stops, playing right (24 games), center (28 games) and left field (21 games). Selected by Boston in the ninth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Kalish was named the Red Sox Minor League Offensive Player of the Year in 2009 after combining for a .279 average (141-for-506) with 18 homers and 77 RBI between Single-A Salem and Portland. In 367 minor league games in the Red Sox system, he has compiled a .284 average (390-for-1,374) with 70 doubles, 11 triples, 40 home runs, 189 RBI, 239 runs scored, 190 walks and 85 stolen bases.
Hermida, 26, has hit .203 (32-for-158) with five home runs and 27 RBI in 52 games for the Red Sox this season, making 43 starts, including 41 in left field and two in right field. On the 15-day disabled list June 11 (retroactive to June 10) until July 22 with fractured ribs, he also played in five rehabilitation games between Portland and Pawtucket, going 4-for-19 (.211) with two doubles, three RBI, a run scored and a walk. Acquired by the Red Sox from the Marlins on November 5, 2009, Hermida has a .259 career average (484-for-1,866) with 62 home runs and 237 RBI in 568 Major League games with Florida (2005-09) and Boston (2010).
Richardson, who is active for today’s game, will be in his second stint with Boston this year. The 26-year-old left-hander was first recalled on June 12 and posted a 2.57 ERA (2 ER/7.0 IP) in 13 relief appearances with the Red Sox before being optioned back to Pawtucket on July 20. In 26 relief outings with the PawSox this season, he has gone 3-0 with one save, a 3.19 ERA (13 ER/36.2 IP) and 48 strikeouts.
The 28-year-old Ramirez has gone 0-3 with two saves, a 4.46 ERA (21 ER/42.1 IP), 31 strikeouts and 16 walks in 44 relief appearances for the Red Sox this season. Acquired by Boston from Kansas City on November 19, 2008, the right-hander has compiled a 16-14 career record with three saves and a 3.55 ERA (106 ER/268.2 IP) in 268 career Major League games with the Rockies (2006-07), Royals (2008) and Red Sox (2009-10).
Turpen, 23, is 5-5 with one save and a 4.09 ERA (23 ER/50.2 IP), 42 strikeouts and 19 walks in 37 games for the Giants Double-A Richmond club this season. Selected by San Francisco in the eighth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, the right-hander is 14-11 with a 2.69 ERA (66 ER/220.2 IP) and 180 strikeouts compared to 72 walks in 144 career minor league relief appearances in the Giants system.
Saltalamacchia, 25, was 1-for-5 (.200) with an RBI in two games for the Rangers this season, including one start behind the plate. He has also appeared in 63 games with Texas’ Triple-A Oklahoma, including a rehab stint, batting .244 (58-for-238) with 11 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 33 RBI and 37 runs scored. In 240 career Major League games over parts of four seasons with the Braves (2007) and Rangers (2007-10), Saltalamacchia has hit .251 (199-for-794) with 38 doubles, 23 home runs, 94 RBI and 100 runs scored. He has made 185 career appearances behind the plate, including 177 starts.
McGuiness, 22, has batted .298 (84-for-282) with 20 doubles, 12 home runs, 46 RBI, 41 runs scored and 53 walks in 78 games with Single-A Greenville this season. Boston’s 13th-round selection in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, the left-handed batter combined to hit .275 (137-for-498) with 18 home runs and 85 RBI over the past two seasons in the Red Sox organization.
The 20-year-old Mendez has combined for a 2-5 record, 6.56 ERA (35 ER/48.0 IP) and 53 strikeouts compared to 29 walks over 14 starts between Short-A Lowell and Greenville in 2010. Originally signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in 2007, the right-hander is 7-9 with a 3.69 ERA (61 ER/148.2 IP) and 146 strikeouts in 37 career minor league appearances (35 starts).
With today’s moves, the Red Sox 40-man roster is now at 38.
