CHATHAM, Massachusetts (Thursday, July 15, 2010) – Y-D starter Michael Goodnight (Houston) allowed just four hits and an unearned run over 7.2 innings as he led the Red Sox to a 2-1 win over the Chatham Anglers at Veterans Field on Thursday night. He improved to 2-1 and fanned five in the winning decision.
The Red Sox are now four points behind Brewster in the East with a 17-10 record, while the Anglers fell to 12-14-1.
Goodnight and Anglers starter Logan Verrett (Baylor) treated the crowd to a great pitching duel, but the Sox broke through with their lone runs in the sixth inning. Right fielder Stuart Ijames (Louisville) singled to left field with one out to score third baseman Tyler Hanover (LSU) to give Y-D a 1-0 lead. The next batter, first baseman Jordan Ribera (Fresno State) drove home the second run when he hit into a long foul out in left field for the second out of the frame.
Verrett was pulled after the inning ended and took the loss to fall to 1-1. He allowed five hits and two runs over six innings, while walking one and fanning five.
The Anglers scored their only run of the game in the eighth when center fielder Brian Humphries (Pepperdine) doubled to right after Stephen Perez (Miami) was hit by a pitch with two outs.
Chatham’s Zack Jones (San Jose State) came in for relief and allowed just a hit over three innings, while Anthony Desclafani (Florida) earned his first save of the summer as he pitched 1.1 perfect innings.
On Friday, Chatham will travel to old-town rival Orleans, while Y-D hosts Brewster.
